Vintage Wooden Ribbon WeavingTwo Piece Loom Shuttle
Marked R999
For Your Sewing, Weaving or Textile Related Collection-Shuttle10
Details
Description:
A beautiful old two-piece wood ribbon shuttle for a loom. The base of the shuttle has two channels with one wooden gear. It has a moving handle, which still has a thread bobbin in it with a hole on top. It is from an old ribbon weaving loom. The wooden box or base has holes so that it can be mounted vertically on the front of a giant loom, with the thread feeding out the hole in the top of the handle. The bottom of the shuttle is notched and a cog wheel or gear adjusts the angle of the shuttle on the base. The handle is smooth and is made of a darker hard wood than the base. The piece is marked R999 on the edge of the base. This shuttle would display very well as a decorative piece or in your collection. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date:
Uncertain but most likely early to mid 1900s.
Origin:
Was purchased at an estate auction in Southern New Jersey.
Size:
The base measures ~4 5/8" by ~3" and is ~1 3/8" high at the end where the gear is and ~1" at the other end. The hand or shuttle itself is ~5 1/4" long, ~3" high and is ~1 1/2" at its widest. The piece itself weighs about 8 ounces.
Maker:
Unknown.
Marks:
Marked on the base with the number "R999"
Condition:
The piece is in excellent condition with no breaks, or repairs. There is what we believe is a stable crack along the edge opposite the gear on the base, under the R999, which extend across the entire width and shows rounded bottom. This is probably caused by use and the piece is still intact but you can feel the edge of the crack by running your finger over it. The surface of both pieces has some soiling on the exterior and some minor scratches. The holes all have markings in black around the circumference where the piece would have been attached to the loom with screws (see photos). There are also a few spots where the wood is dinged and small stains or markings. The piece has wear commensurate with its age and utilitarian function. This is honest wear and gives the piece great character. All in all, the piece is intact and in good condition. Please view photos to appreciate quality of the piece and for additional condition information.
