This is a new condition 2010 book by Catherine Hollan, VIRGINIA SILVERSMITHS, JEWELERS,CLOCK AND WATCHMAKERS, 1607-1860 THEIR LIVES AND MARKS. 11 by 9 inches, 1091 pages, hardbound with dust jacket. This is a massive 1091 page volume on Virginia silversmiths, published in 2010, Detailed biographical listings of silversmiths, jewelers, watch and clockmakers and other artisans-
Many of never previously listed craftsmen and women. Genealogy, wills, inventories, advertisements, property transfers, apprentices- everything that is known. The items and their provenience that the various marks are on are described. Five pages of smiths who have been mistakenly placed in Virginia, (frequently mis-attributed marks are illustrated in the regular text). 170 pages of footnotes, 39 pages of bibliography, and a name and place index.
A great research book with
numerous photos of marks, advertising, and contemporary portraits of the craftsmen. There are no illustrations of silver articles in this book. Numerous new marks with carefully researched attributions. This is the best and most authoritative information available. Old mis-attributions are corrected, carefully researched attributions are made. A stunning book and a must for anyone buying or selling American Coin Silver. I find that the listing in a separate section of the many smiths that have been previously incorrectly attributed to Virginia to be particularly helpful. If you need extensive information on the pre-1860 craftsmen this is the book for you, There is also an abridged portable version available, please see my other listings.
Sorry about the photos- my scanner is apparently out of sorts. The text and photos are perfectly dark and not blurry at all. I will be happy to answer any questions.
