    Description

Unusual Antique Spangled Bone Lace Bobbin
    English * Circa 1830 * Deborah
This antique bone lace bobbin is by a hard to find maker. His identity is unknown but the Springetts (
Christine & David Springett authors of
    Success to the Lace Pillow)
call him Maker No.1 and say he's from the early 19th century (see pp. 55-56
). He was the only maker who used lines to inscribe bobbins rather than dots. This one has the name DEBORAH with lined decoration on the back, all stained red.
The condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or other damage and it has a glossy old patina. The colors are nice and strong. The spangle contains handmade antique glass beads and it measures 4 3/8" long. This is only the 3rd one of his bobbins that I've seen.
*This item is made of bone from a domestic cow (bovine) and not from an endangered species.
