For your consideration is a unusual Pipe boulder opal from Queensland, AU.  Regular boulder opal formed as thin seams, within cracks in the hard ironstone rock.  It is thought that pipe boulder, like this one, formed within tubular cavities in the earth.  It's been speculated these cavities are from either tree roots or worm tunnels!  Either way, this is a type of fossil opal.  This gem features bright (3/5) green and blue Pinfire pattern near the top, and rolling Broadflash pattern near the bottom.
The high-domed, freeform-cut gem weighs 6.16 carats.  It  measures 18 mm long, by 11mm wide by 5.5 mm high. As is normal for this material, there is some minor crazing and pitting.  As always, this is a solid, genuine, ALL-NATURAL, untreated gemstone.
