Liquid medicines are placed in a container. The medicine will then turn into a mist once the machine is started. The patient can inhale the mist through a tube that has a mouthpiece. This method of treatment allows the medicine to enter directly into the lungs of the patient and causes the muscles to open up and allow better breathing.  For Example Albuterol, a commonly used bronchodilator, begins to work in around five minutes when given in nebulizer form, compared to around 30 minutes when given orally, the American Association for Respiratory Care reports.
