    Description

    Petite Antique Silver Stiletto
    French Hallmarks * Circa 1890
The silver handle of this little awl is embossed on both sides with floral borders topped by a fleur-de-lis. It is stamped with the French boar's head silver hallmark used on 800/1000 pure silver made in Paris. It has a turned steel shank and measures 3" long. The condition is excellent with no dents or other damage.
Stilettos had a variety of uses including unpicking stitches and creating eyelet holes in fabric that were then embroidered around in a technique called Broderie Anglais. They were also used to transfer design outlines to fabric, pricking paper patterns along the lines and then rubbing them with a pounce pad or colored chalk powder.
