George Ott Dessert Spoon 1790 Norfolk Virginia Coin Silver
American Federal dessert spoon by George Ott of Norfolk Virginia, c.1790.
Very early for a George Ott spoon, the style and construction fit the inscribed date, 1790 and there is a period monogram T on the front of the handle as well as a later monogram: MFT and date: 1902 on the back of the handle.
Ott's birth date is unknown. He died in 1831 and first appeared in the Norfolk City Directory in 1801. Even if the spoon were not made in 1790, it is definitely a very early example of Ott's work.
This desirable spoon will definitely appeal to the advanced collector and is 6 7/8" long, weighing 33 grams.
Monogrammed and inscribed as described above, the soft, warm, original finish is present, with no buffing or machine polishing.
The excellent original condition and clear detail, with no removals, repairs or alterations, make this an especially attractive offering.
