    Description

This is an extremely attractive fish slice by the sort lived firm of Gale and Willis, NY city.  It is engraved with a very exuberant dolphin which is outlined by piercing.  It is 11 7/8ths inches (30 cm) long and the blade is 5 3/4 by 2 3/4,  (14.5 x 7 cm). The  weight  is 140  grams or just over 4.5 troy oz., testifying to it's sturdy construction.
The server is very crisp and clean  with no noticeable wear or damage.  H. E. Freeman is engraved on the handle, and there is a depression under the last part of that, probably from the removal of an earlier monogram.
Although 1859-62 is a bit early for the routine use of the sterling mark, New York firms were in the forefront of the trend, and most products of the firm are marked Sterling, rather than Coin.
