    Description

Fine coin spoon Edward Hoell, New Bern, NC, Greenville, NC, Pitt County, NC, Greenville, NC,
    circa
    1810-15
Early plain fiddle handle with original engraved flourished script monogram VL. Engraved letters are clear and well preserved. Semi-pointed bowl with decided upturn. Bowl is in excellent condition with an even plateau all around - no tip wear. The sturdy gauge of the silver has helped keep the bowl free of dents or splits. Raised rounded point bowl drop is in very nice condition.
Marked on back of handle in a clear, clean strike E.HOELL in fairly large letters within rectangle - with this silversmith's distinctive rendering of the letter E.  The slightly arcing handle and the bowl both in a sturdy gauge with only light springiness at handle end. Good color and surface.
    Length: 8-1/8".
The style of the bowl and handle would seem to put it in an earlier date than the 1830 one recorded for this silversmith. If Edward Hoell began his career in New Bern, this may have been made there.
