Description
Fine Mid1800 Antq American Coin Silver Hand Engraved Basket Babcock Family CrestPresented is a fine American coin silver basket with a swing handle. This piece dates to between 1840 to 1860. The bowl is done in a scalloped oval form, with beautifully hand chased floral decoration and a central crest belonging to the English family name "Babcock". The handle of the bowl has a nicely done monogram "MCB" in old English engraver's script.
The crest: The escutcheon, with a demi-cock (rooster's head) at the top, is divided into vertically lined (azure) bars charged with three cocks passant (walking) in the fess (middle bar). The shield is bordered with finely engraved flowers and foliage and below is a ribbon bearing the Latin motto: "Deus Spes Mea" (God is my hope).
There are no visible hallmarks, possibly, they were stamped onto the piece before the pedestal was applied. The basket is tested and guaranteed coin (900) purity silver.
This piece is in excellent condition. There are no splits, no dents, no breaks, no monogram removals, and no repairs. There is a slight jiggle caused by the pedestal being uneven on one side by approximately 1 millimeter.
The basket measures about 11 3/4 inches long by 8 3/4 inches wide and stands about 3 1/2 inches tall.
The piece weighs 1 lb 13.4 oz (833.5 grams).
