Figural Antique Silver Knitting Needle ChatelaineGermany * Circa 1850/60
Figural silver knitting needle sheath chatelaines like this were made in Germany and the Austria-Hungarian empire in the mid 19th century. This one is very ornate and is shaped like an arrow. The waist plaque has baroque scroll borders with a silver heart suspended below. This item would have been used to put over the ends of double ended knitting pins to keep the knitting from slipping off.
The clip on the back is to slip over a belt.
It's solid silver.
The waist clip is hallmarked with the German 13 lothiges mark (.812 silver) and the unicorn head hallmark of the city of Gmünd (Germany).
The chains are the original fused link ones. The condition is excellent with no dents or splits and it fits together snugly. The pattern is the same on the front and back and the arrow is 3 3/4" long. The chatelaine measures 5" long from the top of the clip to the bottom of the anchor. A similar one is shown on p. 182 of Nerylla Taunton's book
Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries.
