    Description

    For your consideration is a outstanding etched and machine turned Coin Silver Snuff Box “Presented to Barker Gummere Esq. by the Clerks in his office as a token of their gratitude and respect JANUARY 1st 1862.” Also has a etched crest of a horse bust over a scroll, a sword, and a Scale with the word “EQUITY”. This is a great piece of early American Lawyer ephemera made during the height of the Civil War. Barker Gummere (1822-1895) of Trenton, New Jersey was one of New Jersey’s leading Lawyers, and was Clerk in Chancery 1861-1871. His Son Samuel was appointed Minister to Morocco by President Roosevelt, while another son William was Chief Justice of the New Jersey state Supreme Court. The Piece is in good age appropriate condition, it does have some nicks, scratches, and dings to the underside (see photo #9). The hinge is slightly sprung (see photo #8).
