Description
This is an assembled four piece silver tea service by Philadelphia Silversmith, Christian Wiltberger (1769 - 1851). Stately & dignified, with its fluted forms and generous proportions.Comprising of a hot water pot, teapot, covered sugar and creamer, each lobed, ovoid body with gadrooned banding, raised on conforming pedestal foot, the hot water pot with eagle's head spout, the teapot and covered sugar marked to footring. Hand-hammered bottoms.
The hot water pot beautifully displays an eagle's head at its spout with an ornate wooden handle, which seems to have been painted black & the black is chipping. The handle is also missing a piece at the top, as well as has a crack. One side of the pot has a dent.
The teapot has a leaf-like design on its spout and also has a wooden handle, which is slightly chipped at the top. It also bears the hallmarks for Christian Wiltberger at the footring. This pot also has tiny dents on both sides.
The sugar bowl also bears the hallmark for Christian Wiltberger at the footring & has minor dents on one side as well as three tiny pin-hole shape indents on the base of the bowl.
The creamer has denting on all sides & is not covered like the other three pieces.
Great patina on all pieces. Please view all pictures. Thanks!!
Total Weight: 84 3/4+ troy ounces.
A beautiful & one-of-a-kind set for any collector!
Christian Wiltberger has been attributed to creating similar sets for America's first family, The Washingtons.
