Antique Wood & Bone Adjustable Winding/ Pincushion ClampEnglish * Circa 1860
This unusual antique clamp was made for winding down skeins of wool for use. The main clamp is a C style clamp carved of wood. On top is a pincushion which
is covered with the original velvet (great condition). The screw is strong
and well fitted and holds for the entire length. The center of the clamp has an opening for two wooden arms, each holding a bone* and wood spool. These spin freely and work very well. The arms push in or pull apart to adjust to the size of the skein of wool.
It has a nice soft patina and beautiful wood grain patterns. The condition is excellent with no loss, though sliding the arms to adjust the distance between the spools is tight. Once the arms are in the proper position, the pincushion screws down on them to keep them from moving while being used. It's hard to give the dimensions. The center clamp is 8" high with the screw half way in (as shown). Each of the spools is 3 3/4" high and the bottoms are 2 3/4" in diameter.
The bone finials on top of the spools unscrew so the spools can be removed.
With the arms pushed all the way in, it measures about 14" to the outside edges of the spools. With the arms adjusted all the way out it's about 22" wide.
*This item is made of bone from a domestic cow (bovine) and not from an endangered species.
