Description
This listing is for an antique American coin silver cream jug and sugar bowl. The covered sugar bowl is 9 1/2" tall to the top of the finial on the cover, 8 1/4" from handle to handle and 5 1/4" in diameter at the widest. The cream jug is 6 1/2" tall, 6 1/4" from spout to handle and 3 3/4" in diameter at the widest. The sugar bowl weighs 13.64 troy ounces (424.3 grams) and the cream jug weighs 10.2 troy ounces (317.5 grams). Total is 23.84 troy ounces. There are no monograms and neither piece has any hallmarks but these pieces are old - likely 19th century but may be earlier. Acquired from a DC estate if that helps. It looks like these two pieces may be a "marriage" in that they were not made by the same silversmith, or maybe by the same silversmith but at different times, and perhaps came from a larger set. My reasoning is: The creamer is made of thicker gauge silver. The sugar bowl is substantially taller than the creamer. The design on the sugar bowl is slightly different than the cream jug. The cream jug is missing the decorative border on the foot. The construction of the "feet" of the two pieces is slightly different. The sugar bowl's foot is more rounded than the cream jug.
Very good condition for age with no distracting dings or dents and signs of very minimal/light use. The cream jug has a couple of tiny, pin-head sized dings by the handle. These were quite tarnished when I acquired them and I have spent a fair bit of time polishing them but they could use more work. Both pieces sit flat on a hard surface - no wobble. Please see all pictures for details.
