    Description

Presented is a rare antique silver trefid end spoon. The spoon has a traditional rattail on the back of the bowl. The back of the handle is monogrammed with the old pinprick type engraving. The monogram is composed of the letter G over the letters I and D. This is a traditional marriage monogram with the top letter representing the newly joined last name, and the two letters at the bottom representing the first name initials of the bride and groom. This spoon was made between 1685 to 1715.
This spoon is stamped three times on the reverse with a maker’s mark of PH or perhaps BH with a star below. We have looked in several reference books on English sterling silver and have been unable to find this maker’s mark. It is very similar to the mark of Benjamin Hiller, found in Patricia Kane's monumental book on Massachusetts silversmiths, but it is definitely not the same. He was an American silversmith who worked in Massachusetts in the late 1700s, and the mark on this spoon could be a hallmark Hiller used earlier in his career than the one Kane has listed in her book. But we are not sure. We do know it is very likely that this spoon was made in America. If this is an American trefid end spoon, it is an exceedingly rare find. Please look at the photographs and make your own determinations. Other possibilities include Canada or English provincial work. A kind eBayer has suggested it could be an RH with the quatrafoil beneath, which matches an English 1679 mark, also a very rare old spoon. The pinprick engraving, it's crude nature, suggest an American origin.
The condition is excellent. The spoon has surface wear commensurate with age and light use and some small dings here and there, but this is quite minor. There are no major dents, no splits, no breaks, and no repairs.
The spoon is 7 5/8 inches long.
The weight is 41.4 grams or 1.5 ounces.
