    Description

Antique Mother of Pearl Workbox Thread Waxer
    English * Circa 1850
This little mother of pearl thread waxer is carved on both sides with pinwheel designs and feathered borders. The condition is excellent with no chips or cracks. It still has wax and measures 7/8" in diameter. It unscrews so the wax can be changed. The purpose was to coat sewing threads with wax to strengthen them, especially for jobs like sewing on buttons.
Some waxers of similar style and age are shown on p. 135 of Gay Ann Rogers' book
An Illustrated History of Needlework Tools
and on p. 138 of Nerylla Taunton's book
    Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries.
