Antique Leather Cased Crochet Hook SetFrench * Circa 1870
This little set contains a carved bone handle with 5 screw in steel crochet hooks and a sharp screw in steel pricker.
This was
used for "pricking" bobbin lace and embroidery patterns onto parchment. In the case of embroidery, colored chalk was then pressed onto the pattern leaving the dotted outline on the fabric.
The case is leather and lined with the original red leather and silk. The top is gold embossed "Porte-Crochets". The bone handle is in great condition with no chips or cracks. It has a brass tip where the hooks screw in. The crochet hooks are also in nice condition with intact hooks (and a needle sharp point) and they all screw properly into the handle.
The hook sizes are about equal to American steel hook sizes 1, 4, 6, 8 & 9.
The leather case has some wear at the edges, but is in overall excellent condition. It has a push button closure that works well and snaps closed perfectly. The crochet hook measures about 4 3/4" screwed into the handle and ready to use. Closed, the case is 3 1/2" by 2 1/2".
*This item is made of bone from a domestic cow (bovine) and not from an endangered species.
