    Description

Antique Inscribed Spangled Bone Lace Bobbin * ANN
    English * Circa 1830
This antique English lace bobbin is carved of bone and is nicely turned and shaped. The shank is inscribed with the name ANN and it is decorated with spots and turned bands, all stained red and green. The spangle has antique handmade glass beads.
The condition is excellent with no chips or loss and measures 4 1/8" long. It has a wonderful glossy patina from use and handling. Because of the colors and slenderness of the bobbin, I think it was
an early one, made by Jesse Compton (see pp. 23-26 of Christine & David Springett's
    Success to the Lace Pillow
    ).
*This item is made of bone from a domestic cow (bovine) and not from an endangered species.
