Antique Inscribed Bone Lace Bobbin * BE MERRYEnglish * Circa 1830-40
This antique bone* lace bobbin is engraved with BE MERRY and the lettering is
stained red and black.
It is an early one, made by Jesse Compton and has his signature lettering and head shape (see pp. 23-26 of Christine & David Springett's
Success to the Lace Pillow
)
. Springett says most of his bobbins were made in the 1830s and 40s and then his son James took over with a differet style.
The patina is lovely. The spangle contains handmade antique glass beads and it measures 5" long. The condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or other damage.
*This item is made of bone from a domestic cow (bovine) and not from an endangered species.
