Description
This exceptionally rare antique box features two original hand colored French fashion etchings of bonnets (Bonnet a la Gertrude and Bonnet a la Reiffer). These fashion plates are affixed to the glass lid framed by gilt gold embossed paper on glass. The exterior Gertrude has some signs of age due to being more exposed than the interior Reiffer which is just lovely. My research dates these exact plates to 1793 (I will include research with the box) and I believe they are original to the box, which is clearly marked on the back France. The box also has a beautiful marbleized paper on the interior and a pin cushion affixed to the bottom of the box. It is still a mystery to me what the purpose of this box was for. I am guessing that it was either a sewing box, or more likely a bonnet accessory (ribbon) box. It was purchased from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, which would make sense because of the French history there. My research has hit a dead end, so tag your it to the new owner. It is in great condition considering its age and delicate nature, opens and closes beautifully, and is 6" by 4 1/2" and 1 3/4" deep. Just a marvelous piece of fashion/sewing history. It reminds me of the grand antique French bon bon boxes. Refer to the pictures to further assess condition.
