Antique Figural FishEtui-Sewing Set
French * Circa 1870
This little antique necessaire is in the form of a realistic fish. It is gilded brass with silver eyes and has nice all over fish scales and details. The interior is lined with the original dk blue velvet and fitted to hold the sewing tools. The tools are silver and are marked with
the boar's head French silver hallmark used for 800/1000 pure silver from 1838.
Included are a tiny pair of scissors, a fish shaped needle case, a bodkin, a stiletto and a thimble.
The needle case also has the maker's mark for Victor Charnault. He worked in Paris as a silversmith at 15 rue des Deux-Portes-Saint-Sauveur.
The tall thimble has a scalloped rim and is in excellent condition, in round with no holes or other damage. It is about an American size 7 (14.5 mm diameter opening).
The little scissors (2 1/4" long) have tight steel blades, intact points and cut very well. The other tools are also in excellent condition with no dents or other damage.
The needle case has some tiny steel needles. The fish etui measures 3 7/8" long by 1 1/2" wide and closes securely. It is in great condition inside and out with no dents or other damage. There is a ring at its mouth so it could be worn on a ribbon or attached to a chatelaine.
This etui is shown on p. 132 of Nerylla Taunton's book
Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries.
