Antique Leather Cased Sewing SetEnglish * Circa 1899
The case if this unusual needlework set is in the form often seen holding 3-4 pairs of scissors. This one though is fitted with a complete sewing set. It is covered with leather and lined with silk and velvet (all original). Inside, the bottom holds three matching bone* tools, a needle case, a button hook and a stiletto. Below that are two pairs of steel scissors. The top has silk straps that hold a bone silk winder and a faceted steel stiletto. The tip has a sterling silver thimble. All of the tools are in excellent, usable condition.
The thimble is about an American size 8-9 (15.2 mm diameter opening). It has an engraved band and the English sterling hallmarks for Birmingham 1899. The maker's mark is for James Fenton. It's in great condition, in round with no holes, repairs or other damage. The steel scissors are
3 5/8" and 4 1/8" long. Both have sharp points and cut very well to the tips. One pair is stamped with the maker's mark for J Rodgers & Sons Sheffield. The bone tools have no chips or loss. The case is in excellent condition inside and out and closes well with a snap down clasp. It measures 5" long by 2 3/4" wide (at the top).
