    Description

Antique Double Ended Sterling Silver Emery Cushion
    English * Circa 1840
    The center of this
    double ended
emery is sterling silver (tested). It is engraved with the rose, thistles and shamrocks that represent the British empire, England, Scotland & Wales. I think it was probably made to commemorate the crowning of Queen Victoria in 1838. The cushions are original and covered with red velvet, intact and still with most of their nap
    .
The condition of the silver is excellent with no dents or loss.
It measures 7/8" long and almost 5/8" in diameter. It was probably made by Joseph Taylor and would have been in a set like the ones
shown on pp. 127-9 of Nerylla Taunton's book
    Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries.
Emeries were used to sharpen and polish the steel needles of the age. Emery powder is a fine grit and the needles were pushed in and out of the cushion several times. It also removed rust.
