Description
Antique Canton Flower Mother Of Pearl Thread WinderChinese Export * Circa 1820-30
This lovely silk winder is
carved of mother of pearl in an eight petal flower shape. The lobes on both sides are etched with flowers and the center on one side has an Oriental scene.
There is a tiny surface chip at the edge of a lobe on one side, but the condition is otherwise excellent. It's larger and more solid than these winders are usually. It measures
2
" in diameter and the mother of pearl is nicely luminous. It was made in China (Canton) for the English market and dates to the early 19th century. One like this is
shown on p. 100 of Nerylla Taunton's book
Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries.
