Description
Antique c1850s Large Repousse Hand-Chased Coin Silver Pitcher - William Forbes is in very good condition. There are a couple small dents as noted in the picture. One is to the right of the engraved boar and the other is to the left of the medallion (boar). These can be seen in the 8th and last photo. No repaired or broken areas. Photos show reflections of other colors reflecting off the pitcher.Information below provided to me by The Museum City Office of New York in 2000.
"The style of ornament and the marks stamped on the underside of the base indicate likely made in the 1850s, probably in New York by manufacturing silversmith William Forbes. The additional marks are those of Horace E. Baldwin, a member of a prolific family of silversmiths and jewelers active in Newark. New Jersey. Baldwin went to New Orleans in the late 1840s, where he established himself at 7 Chartres Street. Although Baldwin is known as a retailer, he manufactured some hollowware locally. It is likely that the crest (boar) and family name on the pitcher were engraved by the Baldwin firm in New Orleans once the pitcher had been acquired by a local family".
The 7th photo is a hand-drawn picture of the marking on the bottom of the pitcher. The 10th picture is also a hand-drawn picture of the "boar" that is on one side of the pitcher.
