RARE AMERICAN LARGE COIN SILVER GRAPE OR CAKE BASKET
MADE BY BAILEY & KITCHEN 1832-1847
A simply wonderful example of early 19th century American silver in the form of a large grape basket.  Made by the original Bailey (of Bailey, Banks & Biddle)
who partnered with Kitchen to establish
Bailey & Kitchen creating pieces from 1832-1847.  Silversmiths Taylor & Lawrie were principal makers who created many of the pieces they sold in their store.
This unique basket belies its pure simplicity with a hand engraved grape & leaf pattern within a sloping deep convex bottom.  A solid grape & leafy vine of applied silver encircles the entire rim of the basket providing definition and clarity to the clean lines of the bowl.  The original matching handle continues the engraved pattern displaying a center cartouche with the original owners initials WMJ.  On the reverse is stamped the Bailey & Kitchen punch mark.
