Description
These are the very rare. Except for butter knives, coin silver knives are very rare, and Fiddle thread and shell pattern even more so.The problem is first they were rare, but they also didn’t last long because of how they were made.
The blades are silver the handles are hollow, made in two pieces and soldered along the seams.
The handles are not very thick and they were not made for modern dish washers. They were filled with a substance similar to sealing wax. It is quite hard but if they are heated the wax starts bubbling and expands. This causes two things, the blade is pushed away, and/or the seam splits.
Some people will try to fix the problem with lead solder around the join between handle and blade. This doesn’t work well when the next owner puts them in the washer again.
So these are really for a museum or an historic home or a collector, but not for use.
Almost all have openings along the seam and one of those is quite severe. Many have lead solder at the join of handle and blade. They have numerous small dents. If you really want to use them, call for repair instructions.
